More than an outing: why community participation changes lives

When people hear 'community participation' they often picture a single outing — a trip to the shops or a walk in the park. Done well, it's much more than that: it's about belonging.

Belonging might look like joining a local gardening group, volunteering at the footy club, learning to cook in a shared class, or simply becoming a familiar face at your local café. The research is consistent: people with strong community connections report better health, more confidence and greater independence.

Under the NDIS, community participation funding can cover a support worker to go with you, transport, and help building the skills to do more on your own over time. The key is choosing activities you genuinely enjoy — motivation does most of the heavy lifting.

Our teams run small group programs and one-on-one supports across every region we serve. If there's something you've always wanted to try, tell us — chances are we can help make it happen.
