How the NDIS works

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funds reasonable and necessary supports for Australians under 65 with permanent and significant disability. After you are found eligible, you meet with the NDIA or a partner to build a plan. Your plan lists funding for supports that help you reach your goals. You choose providers, like Nova Cares, to deliver those supports.

Understanding your plan budget

Plans usually have Core supports (daily activities, consumables, transport, social participation), Capacity Building supports (skills, independence, therapy, support coordination) and Capital supports (assistive technology, home modifications, SDA). Your plan says how each budget can be used.

Ways your funding can be managed

NDIA-managed: the NDIA pays registered providers. Plan-managed: a plan manager pays providers for you. Self-managed: you pay providers and claim from the NDIS. Many people mix these.

Choosing a provider

Check that a provider is registered on the NDIS Commission provider register, ask about staff screening and training, how they handle complaints, and whether they can support your culture, language and location. Always get a service agreement before supports start.

Your rights

You have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, to make your own choices, to privacy, to be safe from harm, and to complain without it affecting your services. You can change providers at any time, following the notice in your service agreement.

Living in regional and rural areas

If you live in a Modified Monash Model 3–7 area, NDIS price limits can include extra loadings for remote and very remote areas, and providers may claim travel in line with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements. Tell us where you live so we can plan workers and travel.
